Prof. Patrick Thompson
Pat Thompson is Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University. He has published numerous articles, book chapters, and books on learning and teaching mathematics, with many of them focusing on foundational understandings for students' learning of calculus. His central interest is to improve the learning and teaching of mathematics at all levels. An important part of this research is to develop insights into what constitutes “productive” and “powerful” understandings of mathematical ideas that are complemented by investigating ways students develop these ideas in instructional contexts that are aimed at producing them.
